The vast bastion, built by Rana Kumbha in the mid 15th century, covering an area of 12 Sq. K.m. & stands at 1,00 m was once almost inaccessible. Only once was it captured due to its water supply being contaminated by an enemy agent. Apart from this, it remained safe through the turbulent history of It served as a refuge to the rulers of Mewar in times of strife and contained within its ramparts almost an entire township.

The Fort is also significant for being the birthplace of Maharana Pratap. The highest point of the Fort offers breathtaking view of Marwar & Mewar. The Fort is surrounded by wall which is 36 Km. long & 7 meter wide, second largest in world after the Great Wall of China. Within its complex there are palaces, temples, fields and water resources sufficient to withstand even the longest siege.
